EPD — Environmental
Product Declaration
An EPD is the standardised document presenting the results of an LCA study with mandatory third-party verification and registration in internationally recognised registries. Accepted in LEED, BREEAM, WELL and EU public procurement.
What is an EPD? An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardised document presenting the results of a product’s LCA study, with additional requirements beyond a simple LCA: verification by an independent third party and publication in internationally recognised registries. Prepared in accordance with EN 15804:2012+A2 and ISO 14025.
How does EPD differ from LCA?
LCA is the assessment method — the process of calculating environmental impact. EPD is the standardised document presenting the results of that calculation, with three additional mandatory requirements:
- Compliance with a specific PCR: The LCA study must be carried out in accordance with the Product Category Rules (PCR) specific to the product type.
- Independent third-party verification: An accredited and independent verifier reviews and approves both the LCA study and the final EPD document — this guarantees data accuracy.
- Publication in an international registry: The completed EPD must be published and registered in a recognised EPD registry (IBU Germany, EPD Norge, INIES France, ECO Platform) to be valid and accessible.
Lifecycle modules covered by EPD
In accordance with EN 15804:2012+A2, an EPD can cover all or part of the product lifecycle modules:
A1-A3: Product stage
Raw material extraction (A1), raw material transport (A2), product manufacturing (A3). Mandatory modules for any EPD.
A4-A5: Construction
Transport to site/client (A4), installation and construction processes (A5). Mandatory for construction materials.
B1-B7: Use stage
Use (B1), maintenance (B2), repair (B3), replacement (B4), operational energy (B6), operational water (B7).
C1-C4: End of life
Deconstruction (C1), waste transport (C2), waste processing (C3), final disposal (C4).
D: Beyond system boundary
Net potential for reuse, recovery and recycling beyond the system boundaries.

What do you receive at the end of the process?
- Complete LCA study in accordance with ISO 14040/14044, documented and archived
- EPD document in PDF format, compliant with EN 15804+A2 with all mandatory sections
- Summary sheet (1 page) for use in marketing and B2B communications
- Registration in the chosen international registry (IBU, EPD Norge, INIES or other)
- Third-party verification certificate — valid for 5 years from publication date
- QR code for direct digital access to the published EPD online
Delivery time: 6–10 weeks from receipt of complete data, including third-party verification and publication in the chosen registry. The process is 100% remote — no site visits required.
Where is the EPD recognised?
- LEED v4/v4.1 certification: MR Credit — Building Product Disclosure and Optimization — gives direct points for materials with a valid EPD
- BREEAM certification: Mat 03 — Responsible Sourcing — EPD is accepted as evidence of sustainability
- European public procurement (GPP): Selection criterion in EU public tenders, in accordance with Green Public Procurement
- EIB financing and structural funds: Green infrastructure projects require materials with a valid EPD
- EU Level(s) Framework: The European framework for assessing building sustainability accepts EPDs in accordance with EN 15804
- Corporate requirements (Scope 3): IKEA, Bosch, Lafarge and other corporations require EPDs from suppliers for Scope 3 calculations
